The Dream season is over for St. Louis City SC after getting swept by archrival Sporting Kansas City 2-1 Sunday evening. I know they weren’t expected to be in the playoffs this season and want City SC did in their inaugural season was incredible by finishing on top of the Western Conference ahead of the teams like the defending MLS Cup Champions Los Angeles FC, and established teams like the Seattle Sounders, L.A. Galaxy, Houston Dynamo, Portland Timbers and Real Salt Lake. I would have preferred that City SC gotten eliminated from those teams rather than Sporting Kansas City. Look, I’m old enough to remember the 1985 I-70 World Series when my St. Louis Cardinals took on the Kansas City Royals. Does anyone remember game six in the bottom of the 9th inning with the Cards leading 1-0 and having a chance to win the World Series for the second time in three years after winning it all in 1982? I do, and every St. Louis sports fan should remember that ill-fated called by American League Umpire Don Denkinger when he called Jorge Orta safe on first base when it was cleared that pitcher Todd Worrell foot was on the first base and should have been called out. That called ended up costing the team game when the Royals rallied on to win game 6, 2-1 when Dane Iorg double in the winning base runners and of course Cardinals would lose game 7 and the World Series.
It’s been 38 years since the I-70 World Series and for me personally I still haven’t gotten over it and many sports fans haven’t gotten over that controversy loss. Many of they have families that live in Kansas City like I do and at time nearly come to blows over the 1985 World Series. For Cardinal fans, despite winning more World Series titles than the lowly Royals who’ve won 2, Kansan City Sports fans can always say we OWNED bragging rights of the 1985 World Series title, CHOKE ON THAT ST. LOUIS CARDINAL FANS. I was hoping St. Louis City SC who won the regular season match up series against Sporting Kansas City would beat them in the post-season to at least ease the memories of the 1985 World Series. Just for once lay claim that St. Louis rules the I-70 Soccer Derby. Sadly Kansas City rules soccer just for this year which means that Bradly Carnell and the team should use this as a lesson that when playing against Sporting Kansas City it’s not just a game it’s not just for bragging rights but it’s for a personal revenge after what happened a generation ago when St. Louis fans were robbed of a blowing called on first base and still many of them still haven’t gotten over that loss.
