Expectations were mixed for the St. Louis Cardinals heading into Opening Day, but one player is living up to every expectation handed to him… and we’re still in the first series of the year.
In what has been just a two-game sample size of JJ Wetherholt‘s MLB career, fans have a lot of things to be excited about. His demeanor, poise, and skills have been a welcomed sight to see for St. Louis, and he’s had quite the start. In fact, it’s not just an amazing start to his young career… it’s a historic start.
After his performance on Saturday, Wetherholt became the first member of the Cardinals since 1985 to have a walk-off hit in his first or second MLB game, according to MLB analyst Sarah Langs.
“JJ Wetherholt is the second Cardinals player with a walk-off hit in his first or second MLB game in at least the divisional era (1969), joining: 6/22/85 Curt Ford,” per Langs.
But the history doesn’t end there.
According to OptaStats, Wetherholt is the first player in MLB HISTORY with a home run in his first career game and a walkoff hit in his second. And that covers A LOT of ground Overall, Wetherholt in two games has gone 3-for-9 with a homer, a walk-off winner, four RBIs and one stolen base. Quite the impressive start for the rookie, as he’s been the catalyst for the Cardinals 2-0 start.
It’s not just fans and teammates praising Wetherholt, however.
Cardinals manager Oli Marmol had all positive things to say about the 23-year-old infielder.
“His overall demeanor,” Marmol said. “He’s not going to make much of any situation. And I love that about him. He doesn’t scare. His personality lends itself really well to do this for a long time.”
