St. Louis Cardinals have emerged as frontrunners in Juan Soto sweepstakes

Things are really heating up in the Juan Soto sweepstakes.

The St. Louis Cardinals are the favorites to acquire the 23-year old superstar, according to Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post. There is a long list of teams interested, however, including the New York Mets, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, among others.

Heyman writes that “A few suitors have been told the Nats are focusing on one or two teams at the moment, and some believe the Cardinals are in the group getting early attention.”

According to the New York Post, members of the Nationals organization are declining comment for now, however one NL executive said about the Cardinals’ chances here: “Good farm system.”

“Good farm system” is an understatement.

The Cardinals have a MLB-leading 7 prospects in Baseball America’s updated Top 100 list: 3B Jordan Walker (No. 8), LHP Matthew Liberatore (No. 36), SS Masyn Winn (No. 67), OF Alec Burleson (No. 75), RHP Gordon Graceffo (No. 76), C Iván Herrera (No. 90), RHP Tink Hence (No. 95).

That stash of prospects is perfect for the Nationals to pick through in order to facilitate a trade for Soto.

With that said, John Mozeliak also has to be willing to pull off the trade and unload some prospects.
