Japan wins World Baseball Classic

Japan defeated Team USA 3-2 on Tuesday night to win the 2023 World Baseball Classic. Japan, who went undefeated throughout the tournament, has now won three WBC tournaments: 2006, 2009, and 2023.

They remain the only nation to win multiple tournaments.

And after weeks of exciting international play, the tournament championship came down to a battle between two of the world’s best baseball players: Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout, longtime teammates and the best of friends. Ohtani won the battle, striking out Trout on a full count in the bottom of the ninth to seal the game, and the tournament.

Jeff McNeil, Mookie Betts and Trout were the three batters that Ohtani had to endure through in the bottom of the ninth, and he didn’t disappoint.
