It was anything but a Merry Christmas for the Kansas City Chiefs.
To clinch the AFC West, the Kansas City Chiefs needed to beat the rival Las Vegas Raiders. But the Raiders, coming off a massive 63-21 beatdown of the Chargers, were not about to let that happen.
After going down 7-3, Las Vegas scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in two plays to take a 17-7 lead over Kansas City with just under 5 minutes left in the second quarter.
Starting with the ball at their own 13, the Chiefs put the ball in running back Isiah Pacheco’s hands on a direct snap. But Pacheco tried to put the ball in Patrick Mahomes’ chest, and it ended up on the ground. Defensive tackle Bilal Nichols picked it up and ran it to the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown, much to the shock of the Chiefs’ fans at Arrowhead.
And it only got worse.
Down 9-7, Mahomes was looking for Justin Watson on the right side when cornerback Jack Jones jumped the route and returned the pass 33 yards for a pick six. It’s the second pick six in two games for Jones, who had one last Thursday as well.
To make matters worse, both Mahomes and Travis Kelce were becoming visibly upset during the first half. Mahomes was seen on the sidelines tearing into his offensive line after the Chiefs punted on their first three drives, and Kelce threw his helmet in disgust on the sideline following the 17-7 deficit.
Coach Andy Reid sat him out for a play following the incident.
Mahomes ended the game averaging just 5.3 yards per attempt with one touchdown and one interception, and the Chiefs broke just four plays longer than 13 yards all afternoon. It was the first game of his career in which he lost to a rookie QB and his first career division loss in the months of November or December
For the Raiders, Zamir White did a beautiful job filling in for for Josh Jacobs, totaling 145 yards on 22 carries.
Heading into Week 17, the Raiders still remain in the Wild Card hunt, albeit barely, while the Chiefs no longer can play for the #1 seed in the AFC. Only the Baltimore Ravens, Miami Dolphins, and Cleveland Browns have a shot at the top seed now.
