The Cardinals’ offseason additions thus far include Sonny Gray, Kyle Gibson, and Lance Lynn and aim to help stabilize this rotation after an abysmal 2023 season.

But reports are emerging that they’re not done.

Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the White Sox are weighing offers from teams on Dylan Cease and the Cardinals are “possibly in the mix”.

Cease would upgrade any rotation in the league, despite a relative down year in 2023. He had a 2.20 earned run average in 2022 but that figure jumped to 4.58 last year,

Considering how bad the Cardinals’ starters performed in 2023, Cease would be an automatic upgrade.

He has made 97 starts since the start of 2021 with a 3.54 ERA and 29.8% strikeout rate. The 10.1% walk rate is definitely on the high side but his 12.6 WAR according FanGraphs in that time span puts him eighth among all MLB active pitchers.
