I’ve gone in depth before about the Cardinals’ offseason uphaul of their pitching. Guys like Sonny Gray, Lance Lynn, and Kyle Gibson are among the newest additions to the team, coming off a horrendous 71-91 2023 season.

Despite the additions, there’s always that possibility that the Cardinals aren’t done yet. And one of the biggest names that has come up recently: Trevor Bauer.

After hearing about the interest that Blake Snell is commanding on the market, Bauer tweeted the following:

“Blake Snell is going to get hundreds of millions of dollars on a multi year deal. And he should. He deserves it. For a team that doesn’t want to commit multi years, hundreds of millions of dollars, or many elite prospects for a Cy young award winner, they could sign me for league minimum and pay 0 incremental dollars over what they have to pay to that roster spot anyway. Just another option for teams that want to win and don’t want to break the bank,” Bauer wrote on X.

Bauer is just a couple years removed from his 2020 Cy Young season with the Cincinnati Reds. It should be noted that he last pitched at the MLB level in 2021 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Since then, Bauer was embroiled in a massive legal dispute in which a woman accused him of sexual assault. Bauer and the accuser settled the dispute last year, and he was never arrested nor charged in connection with a crime, according to the Los Angeles Times.

As legal matters progressed, Major League Baseball issued Bauer a two-year suspension in 2022, and he eventually became a free agent.

Meanwhile, Cardinals lead executive John Mozeliak recently spoke with KMOX’s Tom Ackerman last week and seems fond of the current state of the rotation.

“Right now, I don’t think we’ll be in the starting pitching market [for the rest of the offseason] given that we have five starters, and they’re all reasonably compensated. So I doubt we would do something there unless something came up that we thought we had to do.”

The Cardinals have plenty of depth in their farm system, and even have reliable arma in the bullpen, enough to where they probably won’t pursue Bauer.

And there’s nothing wrong with that.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
