For those that know me personally, it’s no secret that I’m a fan of special teamers, especially kickers and punters. Adam Vinatieri, Phil Dawson, Jeff Feagles, Johnny Hekker, Morten Andersen, the list goes on.

To me, they are the unsung heroes of football teams. I’ve seen all too many times that a perfectly placed punt, or a clutch field goal make or break the game for a team.

And lately there’s no better example of that than Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.

Butker, who has now played in four Super Bowls, set the all-time career Super Bowl record last night with nine field goals. He added four in the 25-22 overtime win over the 49ers. Three of his field goals on Sunday were shorter than extra points — 28, 24, and 29.

He later added a Super Bowl-record 57-yarder, breaking the brand-new record set earlier in the game by 49ers kicker Jake Moody, from 56.

Many have argued that he should have been the MVP of the game.

Butker has been outstanding since joining the team in 2017. He led the league in scoring in 2019 and has made 89% of his career field goals, which is second in NFL history to Baltimore Ravens kicker and future Hall of famer Justin Tucker.

He has been a huge difference maker for Kansas City as of late, especially this season when the offense sputtered. Butker had his best season in 2023, converting 33 of 35 field goals, including making 24 in a row, and also hit all 38 of his extra-point attempts.

He’s young, has a fresh leg, and is part of the most dominant team in football right now. Safe to say he’s going to be sticking around for a long time.
