Newly-signed Royals right-hander Michael Wacha was hit on his pitching hand during his final inning of spring training Sunday, and he will have X-rays on his middle finger on Monday to determine the extent of the injury.

Wacha was pitching in the fifth inning of an intrasquad game when catcher Salvador Perez hit the ball back to the mound. The ball hit Wacha’s middle finger on his right hand, and immediately, Royals manager Matt Quatraro came out to check on him.

“We think he’s going to be fine,” Quatraro told reporters after the game. “We’re going to set up a test and X-ray and hope to know more tomorrow.”

The Royals, entering the offseason with major pitching needs, have revamped the rotation, and signed the 32-year-old veteran to a two-year, $32 million contract during free agency. Right-hander Seth Lugo, who signed a three-year, $45 million deal, threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings during the intrasquad game.

The Kansas City Royals begin the regular season Thursday with the first of a three-game set against AL Central rival Minnesota.
