A generational ago, the St. Louis Football Cardinals put fans on the edge of their seats with their thrilling last second victories which they were nicknamed ” The Cardiac Cardinals”. The St. Louis Battlehawks should earn the nickname ” The Kardiac Kaw”, after the team came from behind to be the Arlington Renegades 27-24 on a last second field made by placekicker Andre Szmyt made a 22-yard field goal. Last week the Battlehawks struggled with their running game against the Michigan Panthers. Mataeo Durant rushed for 105 yards and touchdown to give the much-needed ground game a boost against an aggressive Arlington Renegades pass defense that sacked A.J McCarron 3 times during the game.

St. Louis fans showed once again that the city strongly support pro football with 40,317 fans setting yet another spring football attendance record and out drew both Cardinals and St. Louis City SC. Since the Rams left St. Louis after the 2015 season fans eager to show the NFL that the city can support Pro Football and should be given an expansion team if the league decides to expand in the near future. Battlehawks Quarterback A.J. McCarron was 19-29 for 248 yards and 2 touchdown passes in Saturday’s win. After a scoreless first quarter, the Battlehawks score first when Marcell Ateman caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from McCarron to give the team an 8-0. Arlington tied the game win Quarterback Lindsey Scott who played in several series for starter Luiz Perez, ran an eight-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 8-8.

The Battlehawks retook the lead on a one-yard touchdown run by Durant. A two-point conversion attempt failed leaving it 14-8. Former Battlehawks place kicker, Taylor Russolino hit a 52-yard field goal as time expired to make it 14-11 at halftime. Arlington took a 17-14 lead in the third quarter when Luiz Perez who threw for 233 yards, hit Sal Cannella from 6 yards to give the Renegades a 17-14 lead. Then BattleHawks retook the lead when Ateman caught a 53-yard touchdown pass from McCarron and Durant scored a one-point PAT run to make it 21-17. Arlington running back De’Veon Smith ran a 3-yard touchdown to give the Renegades back the lead 24-21. That set up Andre Szmyt who tied the game midway in the 4th quarter at 24-24. After Taylor Russolino missed a 46-yard field the Battlehawks drove down the field to the 2 yards with only 2 second left and Szmyt kicked the game winner to give the Battlehawks a 27-24 victory and the team’s first win of the season.

The  Battlehawks play next Sunday, April 14 at 2 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas against San Antonio Brahmas.
