It’s not exactly been the most relaxing offseason you would expect from a back-to-back Super Bowl champion team.

In March, Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice got into a car accident in April involving sports cars racing at a high speed and crashing into innocent people, and Rice’s lawyer said Rice was driving the Lamborghini in the scene that was caught on video. Rice had a stellar rookie season with Patrick Mahomes at the helm, and was the most effective weapon not named Travis Kelce.

Then, just earlier this week, their star kicker, who made Super Bowl history just three months ago, made worldwide news with a speech that was condemned across various corners of the globe, most especially in America’s sprawling culture war as being insulting to women and the LGBTQ+ community.

Harrison Butker, at a recent college graduation speech, talked about how women have been told “diabolical lies” about joining the workforce but “the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.” He then took a shot at Pride Month as part of “deadly sins.”

“I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” he said.

“How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

And just like that, the Chiefs’ kicker became the latest character on social media, and the NFL had to put out a statement distancing itself from Butker’s comments.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer Jonathan Beane said in a statement. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Whenever a team in any sport starts to win too much, it’s easy to start disliking it. It’s how it was for the New England Patriots from 2001-19, the Golden State Warriors from 2010-17, and now the Chiefs, who have won three Super Bowls in just five seasons, have become the latest sports dynasty.

The Chiefs are on top of the sports world right now… but during this off-season, it’s for all the wrong reasons.
