CITY SC fired coach Olof Mellberg on Tuesday after the team lost 1-0 Saturday Night against the Colorado Rapids. It was the team’s 8th loss of the season, which extends their winless streak to a team record 11 games. “The decision to part ways with Olof goes beyond just results. We’ve analyzed the team’s performance across a number of factors, including the need to execute against a style of play that led to the team’s initial success and has been part of our DNA for four years. … Our fans deserve a better-performing team. We intend to give them one,” said sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel.
When Mellberg was hired in November, there was a lot of Optimism after the club made a shocking dismissal of Bradley Carnell in July of 2024. But the team has struggled throughout the 2025 season as they sit 14th in the Western Conference after 15 matches with a record of two wins, eight losses, and five draws, and an average points per game of .73. Meanwhile, former coach Carnell has led his new team, the Philadelphia Union in first place in the Eastern Conference in the MLS and the best record in the league.
David Critchley, currently the City2 head coach, will take over as interim coach of CITY SC, while City2 assistant coach Baggio Hušidić will join Critchley as part of the first-team coaching staff. Under Critchley, City2 has a 6-4-1 record with 20 goals scored and sits in 3rd place in Group B in the MLS Next Pro. David will make his coaching debut when CITY plays against the San Jose Earthquakes at Energizer Park on Saturday, May 31 at 1:30 p.m.
