Following losses against Minnesota United and a friendly against English Premier League Aston Villa on Wednesday Night, it appears that St. Louis City SC will play the final 8 games of the 2025 season with young, talented players from their St Louis CITY2 squad who are currently sitting on top of Major League Soccer Next Pro in Group B with 43 points.

It’s not known if top veterans like Joao Klauss, Xande Silva, Marcel Hartel, Eduard Lowen, Cedric Teuchert, and Timo Baumgarti will see limited playing time. Still, it’s a possibility that they could be on the move after the end of the season to facilitate roster adjustments and acquire better talent for next year. The 6 players that I mentioned are in their late 20s, and players like Joao Klauss, Marcel Hartel, and Eduard Lowen have been the heart and soul of the Club. They’ve pulled through with some dramatic goals during the 3-year history of this team, but team sports can also be brutal, and nothing is guaranteed for fan favorite players to play and end their careers with their beloved Clubs.

The 2026 season City SC club could have a very new look, especially if interim coach David Critchley is not retained. And what about Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel? 2023 was a dream season for the Club by winning the Western Division and making it to the postseason, only to lose in the first round against archrival Sporting Kansas City, after a brutal losing streak in the earlier summer in 2024, the club shocked fans by firing Bradly Carnell who’s now the coach of the Philadelphia Union and are sitting in first place in Eastern Conference. Meanwhile, St. Louis is on their second coach after firing Olof Melburg, and the team still sits at second-to-last in the Western Conference. Pfannenstiel bears a lot of responsibility for the team’s shortcomings this season, and perhaps the ownership should also look to make some changes in the front office. So, as the season goes forward, the team will be evaluating the progress of these players, and with the playoffs out of reach, the team could focus on playing some young talent from their youth squad like they did Wednesday and gave a good effort against Aston Villa and at this forward the team is just playing for Pride for the remainder of the 2025 season.
