Everything that could have possibly gone wrong Sunday for the Kansas City Chiefs did.
And then some.
The Kansas City Chiefs have officially been eliminated from postseason contention following their loss Sunday to the Los Angeles Chargers, snapping their streak of 10 straight playoff berths — the second-longest such streak in NFL history.
Wins by the Buffalo Bills (at New England), Jacksonville Jaguars (vs. Jets) and Houston Texans (vs. Cardinals) on Sunday in addition to Kansas City’s loss ousted the Chiefs from playoff contention.
Head coach Andy Reid has led the Chiefs to the play-offs in each of the past 10 seasons and to the Super Bowl in five of the past six, but the team has been overall just struggling to get any rhythm going.
But that was hardly the worst thing to happen Sunday, as star quarterback Patrick Mahomes tore his ACL in the 4th quarter and will miss the remainder of the season… and no telling how much of next season.
Mahomes is in the sixth year of a 10-year, $450 million contract. He last won the NFL’s Most Valuable Player award in 2022, and placed in the top 10 the last two seasons. Despite that, 2025 has been a down year for the Chiefs’ offense as a whole, particulary Mahomes. His 63.1 completion percentage was the lowest of his career as a starter. His 22 touchdowns are the fewest of his career.
Mahomes later underwent surgery Monday evening to repair the torn ACL in his left knee that he suffered in Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers.
Also, according to multiple reports, Mahomes had his LCL repaired during the procedure. The Chiefs announced the surgery to repair his ACL, but did not mention the reported LCL procedure in their announcement.
Per the Chiefs, Mahomes underwent the procedure in Dallas with Dr. Dan Cooper, the team physician for the Cowboys.
