Jacob Buchberger, a 28-year-old utility player consistent in the minor leagues, announced his retirement after five seasons.

Buchberger retired on Friday, according to the official MLB transaction log. He tore his triceps tendon in the sixth game of the Double-A season on April 12.

Despite the fact that he never reached Triple-A Memphis, he showed meaningful progress last season at the Double-A level down in Springfield, and was solid depth in the Cardinals organization.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Davenport University by the organization and made his professional debut in 2021. That season, he spent time with the Class-A Palm Beach Cardinals and High-A Peoria Chiefs.

He played in 232 Double-A games since the start of the 2023 season. He was off to a stellar start last season, slashing .300/.417/.500 in six games prior to the injury.
