The Kansas City Royals added catcher Elih Marrero to the organization a couple weeks ago
Marrero was originally drafted in the eighth round by the Boston Red Sox in 2018 and has logged more than 300 minor league games in his career. He also sports a career .691 OPS in the minors, including a .672 OPS in 184 Double-A games.
Does that last name sound familiar?
It should. His Dad is Eli Marrero, The former outfielder and catcher for the Cardinals.
Eli Marrero played 10 seasons in the Majors with the Cardinals, Braves, Royals, Orioles, Rockies and Mets.
He primarily played a utility role with the St. Louis Cardinals as a catcher, outfielder, and first baseman. He perhaps is best remembered by fans as the catcher for Bud Smith during his ‘no hit’ game on September 3, 2001. During his seven years with the Redbirds, he had a slash line of .238/.295/.390.
As far as Elih and his place in the organization goes, the Royals have Salvador Perez, the team captain, as the aging veteran starter behind the plate.
Rookie Carter Jensen, who burst onto the scene as a top prospect this past season, also shined at the end of the year.
Marrero’s invite to Spring Training is a great chance for the 28-year-old to make his presence felt.
