The Kansas City Royals have signed outfielder Starling Marte to a one-year contract, worth $1 million. The contract includes another $2 million in bonuses. Marte, 37, hit .270 with 37 runs, 79 hits, 14 doubles, 9 home runs, 34 RBI’s, 7 stolen bases, and 22 walks with the New York Mets in 2025.
Marte has been an All-Star 2 times: (2016 and 2022). Marte has also won 2 Gold Glove Awards: (2015 and 2016).
Marte had his best season in 2019, with the Pittsburgh Pirates. That season, Marte hit .295 with 97 runs, 159 hits, 31 doubles, 6 triples, 23 home runs, 82 RBI’s, 25 stolen bases, and 25 walks. The runs, home runs, and RBI’s were all career highs for Marte.
In 2013, Marte had a career high (10) triples.
Marte had a career high (166) hits in 2015.
In 2016, Marte had career highs in both doubles (34) and stolen bases (47).
Marte had a career high (43) walks in 2021, combined between the Miami Marlins and Oakland Athletics.
Overall, Marte has played 14 MLB seasons. Marte has played 1,530 games with 877 runs, 1,639 hits, 291 doubles, 55 triples, 163 home runs, 667 RBI’s, 361 stolen bases, 342 walks, and a .285 batting average.
To make room for Marte on the 40-man roster, the Royals have designated outfielder Dairon Blanco for assignment.
Marte is reunited with former New York Mets teammate, starting pitcher Seth Lugo. Marte and Lugo were both on the Mets in 2022.
Marte should be a good addition for the Royals roster.
