A combination of a bad pass, followed by Seattle’s defense, resulted in the only goal scored by Defender Kalani Kossa-Rienzi two minutes into the second half, as the Sounders kept St. Louis winless with a 1-0 victory Saturday night. Kossa-Rienzi came in for Yéimar Gomez Andrade in the 23rd minute after he suffered an injury. City SC dominated possession and field-tilt but ultimately weren’t able to put the ball in the back of the net.
In the 47th minute of the second half, Jesús Ferreira took advantage of a loose ball in the back from St. Louis and found Kossa-Rienzi near the top of the box and dribbled the defender to score the game’s only goal of the match. For Kossa-Rienzi, it was his first goal of the season after scoring three times in 22 appearances as a rookie last year. City SC nearly tied the match in the 55th minute, but Sounders defender Nouhou Tolo made a sliding challenge inside the box to deny the scoring opportunity.
St. Louis had another opportunity late in the game when Marcel Hartel unleashed a rocket from the top of the box, but Sounders goalie Andrew Thomas made a diving save to keep it out. The loss dropped City SC to 0-2-1, leaving First-year coach Yoann Damet still searching for his first victory, and their next game won’t be easy as they go on the road in search of their first win of the season against LAFC.
