The wife of St. Louis midfielder Eduard Löwen died after a two-year battle with brain cancer, the team announced on Monday.  Ilona Löwen, just 28 years old, was diagnosed with cancer in May 2024. Eduard Löwen took an extended absence from the team in 2024 due to the diagnosis.

The team released a statement: “We grieve alongside Edu and all those impacted by this loss and ask the CITY community to keep them in your prayers during this difficult time. Ilona was a beautiful example of love, humility, and kindness, and will be deeply missed.”

Before joining the club, the 29-year-old played for several clubs in his native Germany. In addition to City SC’s announcement, the MLS, along with the rest of the soccer clubs, released a statement sending its “deepest condolences and love to Eduard Löwen, his family, and the entire St. Louis City community.”
