St. Louis remains winless after a 2-0 shutout loss against Los Angeles FC, Saturday Night at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. Mathieu Choiniere scored twice for LAFC, making it his second career multi-goal, while goalie Hugo Lloris notched his 4th consecutive shutout. City SC thought they had taken the lead in the first half, but the goal was disallowed by a foul call. The team dominated possession in the first half and outshot LAFC 19-17 and had a 9-5 corner kick advantage but could not put the ball in the back of the net.
On the 73rd minute of the second half, Mathieu Choiniere intercepted a pass near midfield, raced to the top of the penalty arc, and slipped a rolling shot inside the left post in the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead. Then, in the 81st, Choiniere ended City SC’s hope by ripping a shot from near the right corner of the penalty box that skipped between the legs of defender Timo Baumgartl and bent inside the left post to make it 2-0. The loss dropped St. Louis to 0-3-1, and they hope to get their first win of the season on March 21st at home against the New England Revolution.
Before the game started, both teams wore black armbands with “IL” in white lettering to honor Ilona Löwen, the wife of City SC Eduard Löwen, who died Monday following a two-year battle with brain cancer. Eduard Löwen, who signed with St. Louis as a designated player in 2022, has not played this season.
