Before the 2023 Major League Soccer season, St. Louis City SC were picked to finish in the bottom of the Western Conference. On Wednesday Night the team played LAFC to a 0-0 draw to earn a playoff berth. CITY’s Sporting Director, Lutz Pfannenstiel, had called it “The biggest game so far in the club’s very young history.” They didn’t come up with a win but when Austin FC settling for a draw against the New York Red Ball and Minnesota United FC losing their west-coast matchup against the LA Galaxy, City SC has enough points and tiebreakers to officially compete in the big dance. City SC improved their record to 15-5-10 and 50 points with Wednesday’s draw, to extend their lead against second place team LAFC in the Western Conference while clinching the postseason.
City SC became the first team in league history to win 5 games in their inaugural season. While the team still is on top of the Western Conference the team is winless in 4 games with 3 draws and 1 loss during the month of September and haven’t won since August 30th. The team has 4 regular season games left. If they can win 2 of the 4 remaining games of the season, they will break a league record for the most point for a first-year expansion team. There next game is Saturday on the road against Minnesota United FC at 7:30 pm.
