Nolan Gorman hits walk-off home run to beat Diamondbacks

The first pitch from Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Kyle Nelson to St. Louis Cardinals pinch hitter Nolan Gorman was blasted 425 feet for a walk-off home run at Busch Stadium on Monday evening to open their three-game series.

Arizona scored three runs off starter Lance Lynn, who struggled with command throughout the evening. Eugenio Suárez was the major catalyst, going 3-for-3 against Lynn with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored. The D-Backs had opportunities to tack-on even runs, with a runner at third and less than two outs in both the second and fifth innings off Lynn, but failed to score the runner.

The Cardinals (10-13) trailed from the top of the second inning until the bottom of the seventh but snatched a 5-3 victory on a hanging slider. It was an abysmal outing for the majority of the game: Brandon Pfaadt looked like he was in complete control. He retired the first 12 Cardinals of the game and was in absolute cruise control entering the sixth.

Then the rally began.

He walked the first three hitters and put the Cardinals in a situation to hit their way back into the game. After retiring catcher Willson Contreras on a shallow fly ball to center, Lars Nootbar singled through the left side of the infield to put St. Louis within a run. That would end Pfaadt’s night, with the bullpen needing to get the rest of the way to close out the game.

And a Paul Goldschmidt home run tied things up immediately after for St. Louis.

Fast-forward to the ninth, and Nolan Gorman took care of the rest with a walk-off two-run home run to give St. Louis the victory.
