Nolan Arenado drove in all three runs for St. Louis, and Sonny Gray pitched lights out for the Cardinals as they shutout the visiting Chicago White Sox 3-0 on Friday night.
Gray (4-1) allowed a mere three hits in seven innings. He struck out six and walked one while lowering his season ERA to 0.89 in 30 1/3 innings. Gray’s 0.89 ERA through the first 32 games of the season is the lowest by a Cardinal since… Harry Brecheen in 1948 (0.75).
Talk about history being made.
JoJo Romero pitched a perfect eighth and Ryan Helsley retired all three batters he faced in the ninth to earn his 11th save in 12 opportunities. Helsley was recently named the NL Reliever of the Month for April.
Former Royals pitcher Brad Keller (0-1) allowed three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings for the White Sox, who lost for the 11th time in 14 games. He walked two batters and struck out five.
Arenado’s two-run double gave the Cardinals a 2-0 lead in the first inning. It was Arenado’s first multi-RBI game since April 21.
