For the second week in a row, City SC played to a 0-0 draw against San Diego FC in their home opener in their inaugural season. San Diego dominated most of the match with 67.1% possession and 14 shots on goal but couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. City SC only had two shots against San Diego goalie CJ dos Santos, but both were on goal. The Stifling, defensive-minded City SC, which had 13 draws last season, haven’t allowed a goal through 2 matches but have scored a goal since the season-ending loss against Minnesota United FC 4-1.
Despite a crowd of 34,000 plus for the home debut at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium, the game was marred with homophobic chants that frequently occur in the matches of the Mexico men’s national team. The P.I. announcer warned fans that chants wouldn’t be tolerated, and the game was nearly stopped because of the chants. San Diego’s performance looked like a club that’s been in Major League Soccer longer than City SC and was more aggressive throughout the match. San Diego’s Marcus Ingvartsen had a promising header in the box in the 74th minute but popped it over the crossbar.
City SC goalie Roman Burki, who didn’t have to make a save in last week’s tie, was called upon for one Saturday, during which San Diego outshot City 13-2. Both of City SC’s shots were on goal, but only one of possession-oriented San Diego’s was on frame. City’s next game will be on the road against the Defending Major League Soccer Champion L.A. Galaxy on Sunday Night, while San Diego will be on the road against Real Salt Lake Saturday Night.
