The Stat sheet on Saturday showed St. Louis dominated that match with over 50 percent of the possession and fired off 18 shots, while Colorado fired only 2, yes only 2 shots all game. The home team did everything they could, and they thought they had taken the lead earlier when Simon Becher put the ball in the back of the net at the 19th minute, but it was ruled offside. Meanwhile, Colorado, who came off a win against the LAFC Concacaf Champions Cup game, were happy with the 0-0 result. It wasn’t a loss, but it felt like a home opener lose in front of 23,000 fans at Energize Field. “We had three, four great chances to score,” SC Coach Olof Mellberg said. “It’s normally a game, I think, we win.”
The Silver lining in this game was the performance of the new look back line with five defenders that shut down the Rapids counter strike. It may be good to see a solidly good defensive performance, but moving forward, the question for this three-year-old franchise is whether it’s time to get the big-time player overseas. St. Louis is not a big-time market like New York, Los Angeles, or Miami, where major players like to play for the clubs. You still have some quality players on the roster, but what the team needs is more offensive production as Joao Klauss, has been injured often, and it’s showing with his play on Saturday night against the Rapids. It’s worth going after a player like St. Louis Native Josh Sargent, English International player striker Harry Kane, or Senegal player Sadio Mane.
What are other solutions for City SC? Create chances, be a little more composed, and figure out how to turn dominance into goals. João Klauss and Simon Becher had plenty of opportunities on Saturday Night, but they just couldn’t find that perfect finish to beat Rapids Goalie, Zak Steffen. St. Louis will be on the road against San Diego FC, who pulled off a huge upset victory over defending Major League Soccer Champions the Los Angeles Galaxy, and you can sure as heck that San Diego smells a little bit of blood after St. Louis’s disappointing draw home opener against Colorado.
