The St. Louis Cardinals have gotten off to a stronger start than most experts anticipated and currently sit at 4-2 but were a few pitches away from being undefeated thanks to a couple extra-inning losses against the Angels. Even after the losing series against the American League team from LA, the Cardinals have plenty to be excited about as they head on the road for the first time this season. They will spend the weekend in Boston with a three-game set against the Red Sox (3-4), who have their Home Opener on Friday.
The Cardinals are coming off an exciting game that saw Ivan Herrera make Cardinals’ history when he became the first catcher in franchise history to hit three home runs in the same game, with his final homer being the nail in the coffin on the team’s exciting comeback victory. The starting pitching took a back seat to the offense during the series, but all three starters gave the team a chance to win as their pitchers have done all year to this point.
The current projected starters are Erick Fedde (1-0, 1.50), Andre Pallante (1-0, 3.60), and Miles Mikolas (0-0, 3.38) who will be tasked with cooling down a Boston offense that has surged in their last few games after a cold start. Friday’s game in Bean Town is going to be a high-energy affair with it being the team’s first home game of the season at the historic Fenway Park. The Cardinals offense will look to strike first, as they have done so often since Lars Nootbaar has been moved to the leadoff spot. First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1:10pm CST. Saturday is another matinee with a 3:10pm scheduled start with Sunday being the lone night game of the series, a 6:10pm game that will be the featured Sunday Night Game of the Week on ESPN.
Notes:
- Thomas Saggese was recalled from Memphis after Nolan Gorman was placed on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain.
- The Cardinals bullpen has not given up a home run this year in 23.2 innings, longest active streak in the majors.
- The Cardinals are ranked 2nd in the MLB in Runs per Game, 4th in total runs scored, and the 2nd-most RBIs with runners in scoring position
