St. Louis City’s Celio Pompeu celebrates after scoring the first goal of Wednesday night’s game against rival Sporting Kansas City at Energizer Park in St. Louis. The game ended in a 2-2 draw. St Louis City SC / MLS

A sell-out crowd of 22,000 fans were at a frenzy when CITY SC jumped out to an early lead 2-0 in the first half, but the second half performance brought disappointment and a return to reality for the 2025 season, as Sporting KC score two goals to play to a 2-2 draw Wednesday night. CITY SC winger Célio Pompeu connected with a right-footed shot from the left half-space outside the box to the middle right zone in the 15th minute to give his team a 1-0 lead.

Then CITY SC forward Cedric Teuchert made it 2-0 with a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the lower right zone in the 44th minute. It was the first time the CITY SC had a 2-goal lead going into half time since last season and the first time in 2 months leading right before half time.

But for the visiting Sporting KC, they were not ready to concede defeat against their I-70 rivals, and in the 71st minute, Tim Leibold put his team on the board when he beat City goalie Roman Bürki to bring Sporting back into the game at 2-1. Six minutes later, Dejan Joveljic headed a free kick into the back of the net to tie the score 2-2. CITY’s winless streak now stretches up to 9 games, and the team’s quest for another win continues Saturday evening when they head north on the Mississippi River to take on Minnesota United.
