It has finally arrived. The moment that seemed so clear for more than a month has happened as the St. Louis Cardinals cut ties with pitcher Erick Fedde when the team designated him for assignment on Wednesday.
The move comes amid lengthy struggles as Fedde is winless since his amazing complete game shutout that took place way back on May 9. Over his last 12 starts, Fedde is 0-7 and has a 9.84 ERA in his previous eight outings.
Reported by Katie Woo and Derrick Goold before the Cardinals made it official, the organization opted to DFA Fedde rather than outright release the veteran. A DFA removes a player from the 40-man roster but makes him available for other teams to trade for him in a weeklong waiting period. At the end of seven days, the team then has the choice to release the player back to the open market and take on his remaining salary or send the player down to the minor leagues.
With the Trade Deadline coming in about a week’s time, the DFA made more sense than a release because he will be removed from the Cardinals one way or another. This choice raises the chance that the Cardinals receive some return from Fedde, even if it is just in the form of cash or a low-level lottery ticket prospect.
Michael McGreevy will finally receive the full-time rotation spot he deserves and is now slated to start Sunday against the Padres. Manager Oli Marmol and first baseman Willson Contreras were very clear about a desire for McGreevy to stay in the majors and they will get their wish. Matthew Liberatore will slot back into the rotation after getting his start skipped in favor of McGreevy as St. Louis looked to manage the lefty’s workload this season.
The rumor mill is swirling and I took the past week’s worth of trade chatter and news and put them into one spot that can be found here. As more news circulates, there will be additional stories covered in a new update.
