The St. Louis Cardinals have been searching for a way to balance runways with production and manager Oli Marmol is trying a new strategy.

A series split with San Diego moved the Cardinals to 3-7 since the All-Star break and President of Baseball Operations has stated the team’s current direction is to sell at the upcoming Trade Deadline. This has begun in part with pitcher Erick Fedde being designated for assignment with more moves expected. With the sell off, the Cardinals will now finally be able to implement their promised runway for younger players.

Ivan Herrera is playing left field and Thomas Saggese is playing third base against the Marlins

The official lineup for the St. Louis Cardinals shows that opportunity knocks for the young players as there are some old names in new places. Third baseman Nolan Arenado is again popping up in trade rumors and he will be on the bench today in favor of Thomas Saggese. It could be a scheduled day off but Arenado has been struggling mightily at the plate and St. Louis could be trying to keep him healthy while they look for a trade partner.

Even more intriguing than Saggese at the hot corner is Ivan Herrera playing left field. Herrera was seen as the organization’s catcher of the future not too long ago but defensive concerns and injury issues have moved him out from behind the plate. Since returning from his last stint on the IL, Herrera has been a strict DH as the team looks for added pop anywhere in the lineup. Tonight’s start in the outfield will be Herrera’s first appearance in the grass as a professional.

It remains to be seen if these two changes are temporary or if management is finally trying to give opportunity to their young players. With Nolan Gorman appearing ready to return to action soon, the lineup may be getting even more crowded.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
