On a rainy mild night in downtown Energizer Park, City SC and Real Salt Lake played to a 2-2 draw in the final match of the 2025 season. Victor Olatunji scored twice in the first half to give Real Salt Lake a 2-0 lead. He scored in the 17th minute when he used assists from 18-year-old rookie Zavier Gozo — his third — and Braian Ojeda — his first — to score. In the 32nd minute, Olatunji scored again with his fourth goal of the season in his eighth career appearance, while Diogo Gonçalves collected his career-best fifth assist in his second season in the league. Eduard Löwen put City SC on the board when he scored on a penalty kick in the 42nd minute to draw his team within one, 2-1. City dominated in the second half and finally, on the 88th minute, Joao Klauss game-tying goal in the closing minutes, off assists from Fallou Fall and Devin Padelford. It was the 10th goal of the season for Joao Klauss.
For Real Salt Lake, they earn the Western Conference’s final postseason berth by virtue of a tiebreaker advantage over the San Jose Earthquakes, who, despite winning on Saturday against Austin FC, were eliminated. RSL will play the Portland Timbers on the road on Wednesday in a loser-out wild-card match. The winner will play the expansion side and Western Conference regular-season champion San Diego FC in the best-of-three first round. For City SC they finished 13th in the MLS Western Conference with an 8-18-8 record and 32 standings points, ahead LA Galaxy (30 points) and last-place Sporting Kansas City (28).
Two seasons ago, they won the MLS Western Conference, though they were bounced from the postseason in the first round by Sporting Kansas City. The team announced that they’ve signed their star goalie, Roman Bürki, for two years. So, will Burki be back on the roster next season could look different for City SC in 2026. The big question is whether interim coach David Critchley will be back with the team. That is the decision that will be made by the owner, Carolyn Kindle, who has some tough decisions to make this off-season.
