Why Notre Dame Doesn’t Belong in the College Football Playoff Over Alabama

Notre Dame’s 10–2 record looks strong on paper. The Irish averaged 41.8 points per game, 203 rushing yards per game, and an impressive 458 total yards per contest—numbers that would typically place a team firmly in the playoff conversation.

But college football isn’t played on paper. It’s judged on who you beat, how you compete, and whether you stand tall in big moments. And that’s exactly where Notre Dame’s playoff case falls apart.

Strong Stats, But Weak Competition

Notre Dame fans have spent December insisting their team was snubbed. Yes, the offense was efficient. Yes, they dominated the teams they should dominate. But the glaring problem remains:

👉 They didn’t do it against playoff-caliber competition.

Notre Dame’s best win was over USC—who finished 9–3 and tied for fourth in the Big Ten. Their only other “notable” win came against Pitt, who closed the year 8–4 and unranked.

That’s the entire résumé. For a national title contender, that is not enough.

The Biggest Red Flag: Losing Both Playoff-Level Matchups

The Irish faced exactly two teams who made the College Football Playoff.
They lost both.

Did they play competitive football in those losses? Sure.
But competitive doesn’t get you into the CFP. Winning does.

Notre Dame had two chances to prove they belonged in the national conversation, and they couldn’t seize either one.

No Conference Championship Hurts the Irish—Again

Every year, Notre Dame’s independence becomes a sticking point. The Irish don’t play in a conference, don’t have to survive a conference schedule, and don’t have to risk a third loss in a conference championship game.

Alabama did.

Notre Dame had a 10–2 record without the extra hurdle. Alabama finished 10–3, with one of those losses coming in the SEC Championship Game, a game Notre Dame never had to play.

If Notre Dame wants the benefits of being a playoff team, they need to face the same late-season gauntlet as everyone else.

Why Alabama Was the Clear Choice

People complaining about Alabama getting the nod over Notre Dame aren’t looking at the whole picture. Let’s break it down.

Alabama’s Ranked Wins:

  • #5 Georgia
  • #16 Vanderbilt
  • #14 Missouri
  • #11 Tennessee

That’s four ranked wins—all in four consecutive weeks, with two on the road. That stretch alone is better than Notre Dame’s entire résumé.

Alabama’s Losses:

  • #3 Georgia – SEC Title game
  • #11 Oklahoma
  • Florida State – bad loss

Notre Dame’s best win was over a 9–3 USC team that finished fourth in its conference. Alabama beat four ranked teams and two convincingly.

That’s what a playoff résumé looks like.

Bottom Line: Alabama Earned It. Notre Dame Didn’t.

Notre Dame had solid numbers, a good season, and competitive losses. But competitive isn’t enough when your résumé lacks signature wins, playoff victories, or a conference title shot.

Alabama played a tougher schedule, beat multiple ranked opponents, challenged elite teams, and still finished with a playoff-worthy record.

When you look past the stats and focus on the substance, the answer is obvious:

Notre Dame didn’t get snubbed—Alabama simply earned it.
