According to NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Chiefs will be hiring DeMarco Murray, the former NFL running back who has been on staff at the University of Oklahoma as running backs coach since 2020.

Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports reported Murray as an emerging candidate earlier on Wednesday evening.

Sources say that while Murray was very hesitant to take the job, because of his position at OU, the chance to “learn under Andy Reid and Eric Bieniemy was too much to pass up”.

Murray had a seven-year NFL career that featured three Pro Bowl seasons and a 2014 campaign worthy of the Associated Press Offensive Player of the Year award for the Dallas Cowboys.

He retired from the NFL at the age of 30, retiring with 7,174 career rushing yards and 49 career rushing touchdowns, and he will be 38 years old in his first season as an NFL coach, after spending multiple seasons coaching in college.

Murray spent the last six seasons coaching running backs at the University of Oklahoma, and had success with running backs such as Rhamondre Stevenson, Kennedy Brooks, and Eric Gray.

Afterwards, however, the Sooners struggled to find consistency amid injuries at the running back position from 2023 to 2025.

The Chiefs are continuing to revamp their coaching staff after missing the postseason for the first time in over a decade, and their running game has the biggest question marks.
