If you had Andrew McCutcheon as a Cardinal on your 2026 bingo card, you’re a bold person.

And as crazy as it sounds, it can very well become a reality for the 39-year-old free agent.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic suggested on his podcast, Fair Territory, on Monday that the former Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder could be a possibility for the Cardinals in 2026.

If the Cardinals were to add McCutchen, he would definitely be the veteran leader of a team that has a lot of youth built for the future. He has spent 17 seasons in the major leagues.

He has a career .271 average, .365 OBP, .457 slugging, and a .822 OPS. McCutchen also has 332 homers and 1,152 RBI over his 17-year career. He has a career WAR of 49.0, which ranks 337th all-time.

With that said, some reporters have shot down the notion that he would become a Cardinal, namely Derrick Goold Of the St. Louis Post – Dispatch.

“I don’t have to pull out the binoculars to see it. But I’m not sure what the Cardinals have to offer him — and that’s been the response I get a lot. Money, sure. But not necessarily playing time. Maybe not DH time. And not wins. The Cardinals best offer for McCutchen might be all of the games against the Pirates for him to play against them,” Goold said

McCutchen, doesn’t play much outfield anymore and is more of a designated hitter. With Brendan Donovan getting traded and JJ Wetherholt likely feeling his void, it’s a prime opportunity for a veteran like McCutcheon to play DH.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
