A late goal by San Jose Forward Timo Werner shocked 23,000 City SC fans at Energize Park as the visiting Earthquakes won 3-2 Saturday Night. Trailing 2-1, the Earthquakes caught a break after City SC’s Conrad Wallem was called for a foul in the box. Werner fired a shot into the upper left corner past Roman Burki in the 69th minute to tie the game at 2-2. Then, in the 83rd minute, Werner scored the game-winner with an assist from Ousseni Bouda to give San Jose the win and improve to 6-0-0 on the road and maintain MLS’s best record.

The Earthquakes jumped to a 1-0 lead after San Jose’s Preston Judd found the back of the net in the 8th minute of the match. City SC controlled the ball most of the game, holding possession the ball 56.4%, and finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots. It converted those numbers into a second-half lead when, in the 52nd, Marcel Hartel’s slick feed in the box teed up Sergio Cordova for his first goal to level the match at 1-1. Then, in the 53rd minute of the match, St. Louis went ahead 2-1 when Simon Becher collected a turnover and fed him at the top of the box, and Hartel’s curling shot slithered between Daniel and the right post.

It looked like City SC was going to pull it off, but Timo Werner scored two more goals for San Jose, rescued his team, and snatched a victory for his visiting team. The loss for City SC extended their winless streak to four matches, and they hope to turn things around during the upcoming match on the road against Austin FC next Sunday afternoon. Their next match will be a U.S. Open Cup game on the road against Chicago Fire on Wednesday night.
