Greed knows no bounds, and in the case of Rams owner Stan Kroenke, it’s an all too familiar sight.
Via the New York Times, Kroenke seeks $400 million from the city of Inglewood in a legal dispute over improvements made to the location of the facility property and the surrounding area.
SoFi Stadium stands as one of the top sporting destinations in the United States, and Kroenke, to the little credit he deserves, built it with $5 billion of his own money. Some of the world’s biggest music artists, including The Rolling Stones, Bad Bunny and Taylor Swift have performed there, with massive profitable results.
The managing director of Kroenke’s Hollywood Park said this in a statement: “If the city’s agreements can now be revisited or undone after years of economic growth and community benefit, it raises fundamental questions about the reliability of doing business in Inglewood — and California generally.”
Meanwhile, Inglewood’s lawyers have emphasized in court documents that ‘billionaires are not above the law’ and Mayor James T. Butts Jr. has said the city cannot pay because the development agreement it signed is invalid.
From the sound of it, Kroenke is threatening the future of the Rams staying in Inglewood. It would be the first time he has threatened to move the Rams from their home.
Except that it wouldn’t be.
In January 2014, Kroenke purchased a 60-acre plot of land in Inglewood and announced plans to build an NFL stadium on the site, in doing so ignoring the pleas of Rams fans to construct a state-of-the-art venue in downtown St. Louis.
Two years later in 2016, to the ire of everyone in St. Louis, Kroenke moved the Rams back to LA. The move triggered a massive lawsuit from the city, which argued it would suffer major financial losses tied to stadium bonds and the Edward Jones Dome.
After years of legal battles, Kroenke and the NFL agreed in 2021 to pay $790 million to the city of St. Louis.
But Kroenke sees what he wants, and he’ll probably use everything in his power to get it. Especially at the taxpayers expense.
