The I-70 derby between St. Louis City and Sporting Kansas City lived up to high expectation Thursday Night as Major League Soccer returned to action after an eight week break from The World Cup tournament. In the end Eduard Löwen scored on a late penalty kick to lift St. Louis City to a 3-2 victory.

Sang-Bin Jeong scored on the 28th minute in his ninth appearance of the season and give City SC 1-0 lead. Then Marcel Hartel extended the lead for City SC 2-0 from an assist Simon Becher in the in the 36th minute. Just when City thought they would breeze with an easy victory rookie Capita Capemba scored a spectacular goal unassisted from long distance in the 42nd minute to help Sporting KC cut it to 2-1 at halftime.

Then on the 76 minute Dejan Jovelijic took a pass from Manu García after intercepting a pass from City SC goalkeeper Ben Lundt and Jovelijic drilled the ball into the back of the net to tie the game at 2-2. Then on the 86th minute Sporting KC luck ran out after a hand-ball foul on Sporting KC defender Ethan Bartlow, who subbed into the match in the 75th minute. Löwen scored to give City SC a 3-2 victory.

The win put City SC in good position in qualifying for the MLS postseason while Sporting Kansas City still sits in the bottom of Western Conference division in last place. The next game for St. Louis will be on road against Los Angeles Galaxy on Wednesday.
