In their short history in Major League Soccer, St. Louis City had never beaten the Seattle Sounders until Saturday Night. The club won at home 1-0 and extended its winning streak to two games after beating the defending League Champion L.A. Galaxy on the road 3-0. But the team had to win without their starting goalie Roman Bürki, who fractured his hand in practice on Friday before the game. Backup goalkeeper Ben Lundt filled in his spot and made just one save for his first MLS clean sheet. St. Louis won a free kick early in the 15th minute and Eduard Lowen capitalized to give his club a 1-0.
It was up to City SC’s defensive backline once again to maintain the lead which they were able to despite Seattle holding the ball for a large share of the first half but struggled to break down the City backline. St. Louis nearly increased their lead Conrad Wallem fired a low-driven shot right to Seattle goalie Stefan Frei who made a diving safe to keep this team in the game. Seattle thought they were awarded a penalty kick during stoppage time St. Louis’ Henry Kessler tripped Obed Vargas in the 18-yard box. But video replay showed the ball hit Vargas’ left hand shortly before he went down, denying the penalty kick. City
City SC tied the season-opening shutout streak set by the 2007 New York Red Bulls and the 2012 Vancouver Whitecaps and they hope to both their winning and shutout streak then they go on the road to take on Philadelphia Union and their former head coach Bradley Carnell who coached City SC for two years before getting fired during the 2024 mid-season.
