CITY SC played well enough at home Saturday Night. Still, the scoreboard told a different story as expansion San Diego extends CITY SC’s winless streak to 8 games with a 2-1 victory, making it the longest for CITY SC since their existence in Major League Soccer in 2023. Neither team was able to capitalize on any chances in the first half of the match. CITY came close when Marcel Hartel free kick from just outside the box went narrowly wide just moments before the end of the first half. Another Chance came in the 51st minute in the second half when a Jannes Horn cross fell to João Klauss, but his effort bounced off the turf and just over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, San Diego started to find their chances by spending time in the CITY’s half of the field and waiting for the opportunity to pounce. Midfielder Anders Dreyer fired a shot outside of the box that was saved by CITY’s goalie Ben Lundt. Finally, in the 79th minute, CITY newcomer Xande Silva couldn’t handle a clear from teammate Kyle Hiebert and gave it away to the San Diego side, which winger Milan Iloski capitalized and was able to put the ball in the back of the net to give his team a 1-0 lead.

In the 87th, Josh Yaro tried to clear the ball out of danger but booted the ball directly into the path of Anders Dreyer, who scored and put San Diego 2-0.  Kyle Hiebert scored for CITY off a free kick rebound in the 90th minute to make it 2-1, but time ran out, earning another loss in front of a packed Energizer Park.

CITY hasn’t earned a win in regular MLS play in eight matches. Their last victory came on March 15 against the Seattle Sounders. CITY hopes to end their winless streak in a I-70 derby rematch against Sporting Kansas City that takes place at 7:45 p.m. on Wednesday at Energizer Park.
