It looked like City SC was going to pull off one of the big upsets of the season. Still, Chicago Fire midfielder Brian Gutierrez scored in the 87th minute to give his team a 3-2 victory to keep the Fire’s postseason hopes alive in the Eastern Conference. The game was delayed because of thunderstorms in the Chicago suburb of Bridgeview. Once the game started, the Fire took the lead when Philip Zinckernage scored on the 19th to give his team a 1-0 lead.
It was 1-0 after half-time when Tomas Ostrak scored his first goal of the season in the 47th minute to tie the game 1-1. Then, on the 59th minute of the match, Marcel Hartel gave St. Louis a 2-1 lead. It was Hartel’s third in five games for City SC. But Brian Gutierrez kept his squad alive when he dribbled past City SC defenders before firing the ball past City goalie Roman Burki to make it 2-2 in the 68th minute. City SC had a chance to go up 3-2 in the 75th minute when Fire defender Carlos Teran was originally whistled for handball in the penalty area. However, VAR review showed that Teran’s arm was not extended, but against his body, and the penalty kick was waived off.
City SC was outshot 19-5 and 14-3 in shots on goal. Brian Gutierrez completed the comeback by scoring the game-winning goal to keep his team on top. City SC had one more chance in extra time, when Simon Becher nearly tied it, but his blast from the right wing caromed off the right goal post from about 17 yards. City SC’s next game will be played in Vancouver at 8:30 p.m. Central Time next Saturday.
