City SC has hired Corey Wray to be the sporting director and hopes to turn the team’s fortune after two very lackluster seasons. Wray, a Canadian native, was previously the Director of Soccer for CF Montréal, a role he left in August 2025. Wray has a strong background in MLS, having started as an intern with Toronto FC and working his way up to assistant general manager. He has three MLS Cup titles, a Supporters’ Shield, and seven Canadian Championships. In 2022, he was named Executive of the Year as general manager of the Columbus Crew 2 MLS Next Pro team.

“I’m honored to join St. Louis CITY SC and be part of a city that is so ingrained with soccer history in this country,” said Wray. “The vision and ambition here from the fans and the ownership group are clear, and that is to build a winning and competitive team rooted in development, innovation, and community,” Wray said.

Wray’s first task will be to hire a new head coach. Reserve team manager David Critchley took over on an interim basis after the team parted ways with Olof Mellberg on May 25, after just 15 matches in charge. City SC finished with the best record in the Western Conference in its inaugural season, but it has missed the playoffs in the last two seasons and fired managers during that period. The team finished 12th and 13th in the Western Conference in 2024 and 2025, respectively.

"People ask me what I do in the winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring."
