There were a lot of 2024 firsts for the Cardinals on Monday night.
For the first time all season, they scored 10+ runs. For the first time all season, the Cardinals scored eight (yes, EIGHT) runs in a single inning,
The team’s offense, infamously bad this season, made a rare explosion with eight runs in the seventh inning, and they held the lead the rest of the way to get Kyle Leahy his first big-league win. The 26-year old right-hander has a 5.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB over 9.2 innings through five appearances as a reliever this season.
All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado, who notched his third home run of the season Monday night, is 10-for-39 with three doubles, two home runs and eight RBI over the past 10 games.
“It’s great to see us rally, come back, have a big inning,” said Arenado. “The back end of their bullpen is pretty good, so we were happy to get those runs in and get the win.”
The Cardinals sent 14 batters to the plate in the top of seventh inning. It was a great bounce back for the team following a seven-game losing streak that saw them fall to eight games under .500.
“Up and down the lineup, guys did a really nice job of driving the baseball, getting their hits, and also taking their walks, which is a good sign,” Cards manager Oliver Marmol said. “We did a little bit of everything.”
With the victory, St. Louis is now 17-24 overall and 11-13 on the road. The Cardinals have a 9-4 record in games when they scored at least five runs.
TUESDAY PITCHING PROBABLES: Cardinals: Sonny Gray (4-2, 2.29 ERA, 0.96 WHIP, 44 strikeouts); Angels: Reid Detmers (3-4, 4.96 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, 49 strikeouts)
