In the narrowest voting margin since 2009, Colorado star WR/DB Travis Hunter won the Heisman Trophy, edging out Boise State star RB Ashton Jeanty by 214 points — 2,231 to 2,017.
Hunter is the first two-way player to win the Heisman Trophy since Charles Woodson did so back in 1997.
Jeanty had a historic season of epic proportions. He came just 132 yards short of breaking Barry Sanders‘ single-season rushing record with 2,497 yards on the ground, a new MWC (Mountain West Conference) record. But that’s just scratching the surface of how historic his season was: not only did he have at least 100 yards rushing in every game this year, he had 100-plus yards on the ground in a single half 17 times this season.
And here’s the wildest stat of all….
North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton finished as the nation’s second-leading rusher. Hampton finished the regular season with 1,660 yards rushing, which is a great feat. Meanwhile Jeanty, posted 1,889 yards after contact. That means Jeanty had more yards AFTER CONTACT than any other college football player had total yards rushing.
With all of that said, let’s not discredit Travis Hunter. In 12 games, Hunter caught 92 passes for 1,152 yards and four touchdowns, while recording 31 total tackles (20 solo, 11 assisted), 11 passes defended, four interceptions, and one forced fumble. His dominance on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball have made him a “generational talent” in the eyes of many scouts.
