Entering today, the Chiefs were 0-4 against current-seeded playoff teams in the AFC and 0-5 in one-score games, a complete reversal from last year’s astonishing 11-0 record. And the 8-2 Colts entered Arrowhead stadium looking to continue their hot streak, with one of the MVP favorites, running back Jonathan Taylor, leading the way.
But this week… this week belonged to the Chiefs.
With his victory over the Colts, Patrick Mahomes has now defeated 31 of the 32 NFL teams in the regular season
The crucial victory gives Kansas City (6-5) a 59% chance to make the postseason; a loss would have dropped that likelihood to 31%, according to NFL statistics. And in a division with the Broncos and Chargers both off this week, it couldn’t have come at a better time.
Kansas City’s defense shut down the electric Colts offense. Taylor entered the game leading the NFL in rushing yards, touchdown runs and total touchdown, but he finished with a season-low 66 yards from scrimmage.
And despite their big lead in the third quarter, the Colts were shut down in the fourth and in overtime.
Kansas City has made the playoffs 10 consecutive seasons, the second-longest streak in NFL history, and a loss today would’ve seriously put that streak in jeopardy. Also an interesting piece of trivia: with his victory over the Colts, Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has now defeated 31 of the 32 NFL teams in the regular season.
It goes without saying which team he hasn’t beaten yet…
