St. Louis’s Brendan McSorley shocked NYCFC with a 95th-minute header from the center of the box off a long ball from Lukas MacNaughton to earn a 1-1 draw on Saturday night at Citi Field. Marcel Hartel almost put City SC on the board twice in the 26th minute and the 39th minute, but NYCFC goalie Matt Freese denied him to keep the game scoreless. The match remained scoreless, but with six minutes into the second half, NYCFC Hannes Wolf took a pass from Maxi Moralez and scored to give his team a 1-0 lead.
City SC had multiple opportunities to tie the game when Hartel’s attempt sailed very high over the goal in the 68th minute, and Cedric Teuchart was wide left on an 82-minute. Then, in the 80th minute, Brendan McSorley subbed in for Simon Becher in the 80th minute and on the 95th minute of the match, delivered the equalizer in St. Louis City’s first trip to the Big Apple. City SC Defender Lukas MacNaughton earned his first assist in his 63rd career appearance, while Midfielder Conrad Wallem notched his first after tallying four as a rookie last season.
NYCFC’s goalie finished with two saves, while City SC’s goalie Roman Bürki turned away six shots in the game. While the game ended in a draw, it was a moral victory for City SC, and they hope to continue their two-game unbeaten streak on the road when they play FC Dallas on Saturday.
